Swine

Ah, the humble pig.

Recorded by Grey Scholar Cael of Heartwood:

Ah, the humble pig. They eat what we do not, and are in turn eaten by us.

The soil here is poor, and the crops that grow well are meagre. What does thrive are mushrooms, brambles, mosses, and insects. Unfortunately, aside from the occasional grub or edible mushroom, we are not blessed with the ability to eat much of this.

The swine, however, can.

It is no exaggeration to say that we owe our lives in this dying forest to these creatures. During spring, summer, and autumn they eat mushrooms, bloodroot leaves, domestic waste, and whatever else they can find.

During winter they become gammon, bacon, sausages, black pudding…

My mouth waters at the thought of it.
